We set off from Clapham South and wended our way out of South London and gradually into the Surrey countryside. At various points on the way we were reminded of the mayhem and muppetry of the official London to Brighton by signs left over from the previous week pointing out the route and reminding us helpfully to “ride on the left”. Although having said that, later in the day I could have done with a reminder along the lines of “don’t pull out into the path of fast approaching vehicles coming in both directions”. A momentary lapse of reason which gave me pause to reflect on my mortality somewhat more than I would have liked to. more »

Do it as your first, do it as your fastest, do it on fixed… Last year it was my first, I don’t do fast, so it had to be…
To ensure success, I had formulated a [cunning plan] and route-sheet marked with little arrows. Did it work? Well…

Criterium racing Saturday evening June 23rd
A pretty (good) crowd, sporting more than a little Rapha, and with a fair few Condors in evidence. A spectacular pile-up in the Regional race, and a creditable show of 4th by Ben Johnson, at least technically of Central London, in the All Stars. I arrived just in time to see the couriers do complex and secretive things, emerging occasionally for a dash around the square. Racing, but not as we know it. They do have a reputation to maintain. Then the heavens opened, more »

The ride-out crew, including the fixed brigade, was out in force again as six pedalled to Brentwood to meet Kelvin; on his debut as a 3-star leader. Today’s crew were Camille, Kate, Naomi, Keith, Nick and myself and we had a pretty uneventful ride to Brentwood, arriving just in time for a quick coffee stop before joining the ride. I say, ‘just in time’ but that was not quite right as we were riding down to the station when we met Kelvin leading the remaining riders who had already started. more »

‘Jack Sharp revisited’ led by Kelvin Dane
…and if that was the cleverly tweaked and navigated Jack Sharp reliability trial, I still have no idea who Jack Sharp was, except he must have been fast. Just count me as one of the unreliable, and save me the pain. Trial, it certainly was. But everyone else seemed to do fine. Think I’m suffering from over Essex-fixation.

The weather gods have been exceptionally good for my recent rides with CTC. Today was another day that was close to perfection in cycling terms with plenty of sunshine and a good crowd that eventually numbered sixteen.
As has happened recently there was a major riding out group that I managed to lead out from north London. Those that met at Finsbury Park station were Angela, Geraldine, Kate and Jeremy. The latter two were new to me more »

Due to train troubles Jo’s ride started from Horsham rather than Amberley and she had to rethink the route she had planned. However faultless research on her part led the intrepid 6 riders to a delectable tea spot at Southwater Country Park. Then it was on through lovely untrafficked country lanes to a superb pub at Warninglid where we lunched in the sunny garden under a tree.
