Avoiding the headwind home … the hard way!

Posted on Sunday 13 January 2008 by Richard Philpott

The broken crank On Sue and Simon’s two-star ride this morning we all noticed the strong tailwind and inevitably talked about having to face the headwind on the return to Stevenage. As we turned into the pub (the excellent Fox and Duck at Therfield) on the stroke of twelve I inadvertently found a novel way of avoiding it — my crank neatly shearing off halfway down!

I reckon I was actually very lucky with this, because:

  • it happened at very low speed, so I didn’t lose control;
  • we’d just got to the pub, so I still got my lunch;
  • we were only six kilometres from Royston with its excellent train service back to London, and even better it was all down hill with the wind behind me;
  • and best of all, I didn’t have to ride into the headwind back to Stevenage!.
