Bob’s 4 star ride 20/01/08

Posted on Monday 21 January 2008 by Bob Davis

Bit of a weird day really, but it worked out fine in the end.

The idea was to go into the Chilterns and have a (unofficial)hill-climb race. Bit stupid in January, but it was OK because it didn’t happen!

On Saturday night I got an e-mail from Rory saying that engineering works had closed the Metropolitan line – I thought the secretary would inform us of changes. (That will be the all-seeing all-knowing Secretary then - Nick). Anyway, I e-mailed him back and met him at Finchley Road tube station with a view to going round the Shenley circuit for a short day. Geoff turned up and said he didn’t want to – how about Kings X for the north of Hertford area? In fact we ended up riding out.

Yet another unforeseen change happened when Rory and Geoff were too wussy to go through one of the many floods, so we went towards Hertingfordbury and I just batted into Hertford on my own on the dual carriageway while they went off at Pansghanger Aerodrome – anyway we met at Hertford North station to buy bananas. Then on to lunch at Westmill with the wind pushing us there.

On the way back I showed Rory the Davis ancestral home at Westland green, back through Much Hadham and then Geoff started fading (he had only had a piece of cake for lunch). Then going through Dane End we bumped into Roger and Kay and they joined us for the ride back to Welwyn North. Geoff faded and asked to be left alone to get a later train – we carried on for the 3.47, saw Sue Dorey, her Simon and Paul Krebs on the same train and I got back home with 120 kms under my belt.
